English Business Discussion (Masters)
This course will be delivered using the training and practical session styles. This course offers students instruction and practice in the speaking and listening skills necessary for functioning in a business environment. In addition to pair work, group work, and role-play, the course will include more formal activities such as presentations and negotiations. Students will also be able to learn vocabulary and set expressions that are common in business settings. Since business is very much a “social art,” the class will include practice and exercises in less formal situations, such as meeting people, making small talk, and cross-cultural communication.
Goals At the end of this course, students will be expected to: Have an expanded business-specific English vocabulary. Have greater understanding of speaking strategies useful for business settings. Have greater fluency in spoken English. Have greater confidence in using English. Have greater sensitivity to cultural differences in business settings. Schedule Week 1 ─ Introduction to the course, teambuilding activities Week 2 ─ Introducing people, dealing with weak vowels, etc. Week 3 ─ Describing companies, linking sounds, etc. Week 4 ─ Telephoning, repeating information, etc. Week 5 ─ Occupations, examples, etc. Week 6 ─ Schedules, clarifying, etc. Week 7 ─ Small talk, dealing with disappearing sounds, etc. Week 8 ─ Mid-term Role-play presentations Week 9 ─ Talking about large numbers, confirming, etc. Week 10 ─ Past work, paraphrasing, etc. Week 11 ─ Explaining procedures, turn-taking, etc. Week 12 ─ Describing location, appropriate gestures, etc. Week 13 ─ Talking about food, indirectness, etc. Week 14 ─ Future plans, casual English Week 15 ─ Presentation (business trip plan/report) Grading 60% - In-class activities completion 15% - Mid-term Role-play 15% - Presentation 10% - Final report |
