Business English Reading
This course will be delivered using the training and practical session styles. It will provide students with instruction and practice in reading for academic and business purposes. Students will study useful vocabulary, practice reading a variety of texts and learn skills for improving speed and understanding in reading English.
Students will need to use as much English as possible in this class. Please come to class motivated and ready to use English. Also, students must complete regular outside reading before each class. The goals of this course are to: a) Demonstrate increased general English reading fluency (speed plus understanding). b) Demonstrate use of a variety of skills for understanding content. c) Demonstrate improved comprehension of vocabulary. d) Read 5500 to 8500 words of level-appropriate English each week. e) Explain a non-fiction graded reader in 2 to 3 minutes. Schedule: 1. Course introduction. M-Reader & Word Engine 2 - 14 Skills, vocabulary, & fluency practice. Graded reader discussions. 15. Final presentation, portfolio preparation. Students should expect to spend two hours or more each week studying outside of class. Required text: 1. More Reading Power 3 Student Book (Third Edition), Jeffries & Mikulecky, Pearson-Longman. 2. WordEngine access (Lexxica) 7% - Skills Exercise Completion 7% - Vocabulary Exercise Completion 8% - Fluency Task Completion 10% - Independent Vocabulary Study 35% - Extensive Reading Completion 8% - Graded reader discussions 25% - Final presentation and portfolio Consistent attendance in class is very important so please make every effort to be present.
